What CrossFit Coaches Won’t Teach You About The Handstand Walk

I’ve been doing CrossFit for more than three (3) years and I love the sport. But I have to admit that I have witnessed the most outrageous pieces of advice coming out of coaches when one is trying to unlock the handstand walk.

Don’t get me wrong, I have nothing against CrossFit neither coaches, it’s just that I see the same pattern over and over again. Coaches teaching apprentices handstand progressions for months to end up seeing demotivated students without learning a thing.

The main reason why people abandon the practice is not lack of skill, it’s old school motivation. If you practice good enough, eventually you end up unlocking the skill. What coaches won’t teach is a timeless skill that has built the most successful long-term accomplishments of humanity: patience.

And that begins with honesty. Being blunt about the learning curve of the skill. It depends on many factors, but at least when you know it will take time, you know what to expect, instead of desperately going all in and seeing no results.

Time is what will help you unlock this skill. In my program, most apprentices won’t take more than 8 weeks for them to start giving a few steps, at least. I have thoroughly honed it using a gymnastic strength training based workout to take the best out of your capacity to finally unlock this precious skill.
